Holy Name Cathedral was filled with an invitation-only crowd of cardinals, bishops, priests, politicians and the ordinary faithful yesterday afternoon for the funeral Mass for Cardinal Francis George. In a ceremony conducted in part in multiple languages, the Cardinal was remembered as a man of great intellect and great compassion, whose faith guided his life from boyhood on Chicago's northwest side to his role as leader of Chicago's Catholic community. At Catholic schools around the archdiocese, children gathered in gyms and auditoriums to watch the Mass on large video screens. Cardinal George will be buried next to his parents in a cemetery in the western suburbs. He died last week at the age of 78, nine years after first being diagnosed with cancer.
