Investigation continues in Byron house fire that killed 2 (Updated)

The investigation continues in a house fire in Byron last Wednesday morning that killed a woman and her son.

The blaze was noticed at around 6:30  at 2020 Silverthorn Avenue as smoke had filled the home.

31-year old Margaret "Maggie" Meyer was found dead inside the residence. Her son, 3-year old Amos,  was taken to a Rockford hospital where he died from his internal injuries. The boy was in an upstairs bedroom when the fire began.

CPR was being performed on the child by his father and police when the fire department arrived on the scene.

Meyer was a behavior disorder teacher for the Ogle County Education Cooperative. She worked at the Chana Education Center.

An autopsy has been performed on both bodies.

The cause of the fire has not been announced at this time. The flames appear to have started near a couch inside the home.

Meyer did not smoke and no electronic items were found near the origin of the fire. She grew up in Mt. Morris and graduated from Oregon High School.

The Illinois State Fire Marshall is handling the investigation.
