Rochelle officials talk about the future of the landfill

The future of the landfill topped the discussion last night by Rochelle city officials dealing with the agreement reached in April of 2008. This included digging up Cell 1 and placing a liner to prevent any leakage along with the smell coming from the landfill.

The city received a letter from current and past council members in which they should followed the host agreement. It was signed by current councilman Dave Eckhardt along with former city officials Dennis Berg, Spencer Hayden, Ed Kissick, and Wendell "Pal" Colwill.

Kissick spoke during last night's meeting. He said that the city is selling out Creston if they do not dig up Cell 1 at the landfill and place a liner to prevent problems with the water system.

Roger Beardin from Creston has his house near the landfill. He says it smells 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Each of the 6 council members at last night's meeting agreed that the agreement should be followed and no new deal be reached with Waste Connections who is looking to save money on the project. Mayor Chet Olson said that the company must follow the host agreement.

Absent from the meeting was councilman Don Burke.

The company has 37 criteria in the host agreement to complete. Mayor Olson said that city staff and attorneys are looking into the criteria list in what has been completed.

The capital improvement plan was approved last night for the next 5 years along with establishing a unrestricted cash reserve policy for a year involving the RMU water and water reclamation departments.
