Oregon city officials may face a lawsuit in the Ogle County jail project

Oregon city officials may be faced with a lawsuit if an agreement can not be reached dealing with the closure of South 6th Street between Washington and Jefferson Streets for a new Ogle County Jail.

The council voted last month 3-2 in favor of the proposal. The issue needed a supermajority of 4 votes to pass.

The Ogle County board decided Tuesday evening that they will send an offer to the Oregon city council to reach an agreement on the street vacation. Ogle County board chairman Kim Gouker of Byron said they looked at every change and adaption to the original design plan and to accommodate the street vacation denial. He said it would cause more intrusion on the neighbor's property and offer far less guarantee of public safety.

The chairman said it would be more costly to build and create more inefficiency in the operation of our judicial system.

Gouker said that the final option would be a lawsuit against the city. He said 2 of the city council members chose to make their decisions prematurely and for political reasons.

County officials looked at above ground and underground walkways if 6th Street remained open in Oregon. They felt the building would be more inefficient and add 1.5 to 2 million dollars to the project cost.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said that if a lawsuit is filed, it would delay the jail project 5 to 6 months. The facility is expected to cost between 25 to 28 million dollars with 180 to 200 prisoners.

The board approved 3 bids for work on the Emergency Operations Center in Rochelle. They included the north parking lot, a generator pad, and roof deck repairs that totaled just under $26,000. The renovation project is scheduled to be completed by August 31st.

Work on the new parking lot near the Judicial Center was also approved at a cost of $104,000.
