Rochelle officials check on damage from the weekend flood

Rochelle officials are continuing to check on the damage done by the flooding this past weekend.

Over 5 inches of rain fell between last Thursday and Saturday. The majority of the flooding was on the northeast side of town. This included May Grade School, the Rochelle Little League complex, and several subdivisions. These areas are in the city's flood plain.

City engineer Sam Tesreau said that the flooding falls under a 50-year event for the community. He said that Rochelle has not seen this type of standing water since the late 1990's.

Tesreau said that the damage could have been worse. The city has spent more than $600,000 for the cleaning of Kyte Creek along with upgrading the storm sewer system and storm water detention in the areas.

City staff will check on the damage done to the roads and bridges along with Kyte Creek.

They will then see if the city can receive state or federal funding in the future.

Residents at the Oregon Living and Rehabilitation Center were also evacuated from the faciity this past weekend due to standing water in the area South 10th Street.
