Mortar shells found in rural Creston

Emergency personnel were on the scene for over 3 hours yesterday northeast of Creston when 2 old mortar shells were found by a farmer.

Rochelle Fire Chief Dave Sawlsville said that the mortar shells were located in a dried up creek bed along East Line Road, just north of Twombly Road.

Sawlsville said that the Winnebago County bomb squad was called to the scene. They determined that the mortar shells were too old to be dangerous, but they did not want to take a chance. Both were blown up in the grass area.

No one suffered any injuries from the incident.

Emergency personnel also responded to a 2-year old boy who was reported lost by his family in rural Creston yesterday afternoon.

He was located a short time later walking along Creston Road. The child was not hurt from the incident.
