Several Memorial Day services will be held today in the area as we honor those individuals who have helped protect this country.
In Rochelle, the parade begins this morning at 10 near City Hall at 6th Street and 6th Avenue. It then travels down Lincoln Highway, Lincoln Avenue, 9th Street, and 8th Avenue.
The parade ends at the Lawnridge Cemetery by the veterans memorial.
The ceremony begins at 11am. The guest speaker will be Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson.
Other area services and parades include:
**Services will be held at 10am at the Creston Woodlawn Cemetery. In case of rain, the program will be held at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Creston.
**Guest speaker will be WW II Veteran John Roe
**Vietnam veterans will be recognized during the ceremony
**Bring lawn chairs for your seating
**The White Rock Cemetery Association will hold its services at 9:30 at the Elim Reformed Church in Kings.
**2 students from KIngs school have written essays on the 150th Anniversary of
Memorial Day. Music will be provided by Abby Houston.
**Following the service, all are invited to the White Rock Cemetery to honor our
veterans.
**Refreshments will be served in the church basement following the cemetery
service.
**Ashton: American Legion Post 345 will hold a ceremony at 10 at the Mills and Petri building. Guest speaker will be Vietnam Navy Veteran Doug Wean. The color guard will march to the Ashton Cemetery for a short service.
**Franklin Grove: A parade begins at 1:30 at the American Legion Post 497. A ceremony will be held at the Veterans War Memorial at Flat Iron Park. Guest speaker will be State Representative Tom Demmer.
**Oregon: Wreaths will be placed at 9am at the World War I Memorial and at 9:15 at the new veterans memorial on the north side of the courthouse. A tribuute to the POW and MIA soldiers begins at 9:20 followed by the parade at 9:30. The service will be held at the Riverside Cemetery. A potluck luncheon will follow at the Oregon VFW. Bring a dish to pass. In case of rain, the service will be held at the VFW.
**Polo: Parade begins at 9:30 at Mason and Green Streets. The ceremony will be held at the Fairmount Cemetery.
**Mt. Morris: The American Legion Post 143's ceremony begins at 10am at the Mt. Morris bandshell. The service will be held at the Moose Lodge in case of rain. A potluck luncheon will be held at the Moose Lodge. Bring a dish to pass. Sandwiches will be provided.
**Roberts Armory WW II Museum will also be open today between 1 and 4. Weather permitting, the Higgins Boat will be open for viewing. The Armory is located off Intermodal Drive. There is no admission charge.
