It was closer than it needed to be for the Yankees, but they held off the White Sox 6-5 to open a four-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field. New York jumped out to a 6-1 lead behind three runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings. Tyler Austin hit his first homer of the season, while Jordan Montgomery improved to 6-and-4. Montgomery cruised through seven innings, holding Chicago to one run and striking out eight.
Aroldis Chapman was forced into action during the Sox's four-run ninth inning. He earned his eighth save by getting the final two outs. Tim Anderson's three-run shot in the final half frame made things interesting.
Game 2 in the series is tonight in Chicago and can be heard on Good Time Oldies 1060.
