There won't be an immigration wing in the jail in Rockford. Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana yesterday walked away from the plan when he said federal immigration officials wouldn't agree to his terms.
Caruana had hoped to make money by renting space in the jail to ICE, but said he wanted a guarantee that immigration officers would only send immigrants accused of violent crimes to his jail. Many in Rockford's Latino community are happy to hear about the plan's demise.
