SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois State Police are warning of a new phone scam where someone impersonates a trooper and tries to get personal details from you. They say victims receive a call where a scammer claims to have information about their identity being stolen. The Illinois State Police say that agents will not make cold calls requesting personal or financial information, or ask you to confirm those details via phone. If you do receive a call from anyone claiming to be law enforcement, they advise you to ask for their name, badge, and a phone number then hang up. You should then call the agency directly that they claim tried to reach you to confirm if the call was legit. If you think you have fallen victim to a scam and potentially gave out your personal or financial information, contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Identity Theft Hotline at (866)999-5630.
