(Boston, MA) -- Number three Illinois pulled off an upset in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men's tournament.
The Fighting Illini edged second-seeded Iowa State 72-69 from Boston. Terrance Shannon Jr. led all scorers with 29 points and grabbed five rebounds to go with three steals. Coleman Hawkins added 12 points and six rebounds, while Luke Good nailed a pair of threes off the bench and finished with eight points.
Illinois will face top-overall seed UConn in the East region of the Elite Eight on Saturday.
It is the first time the Fighting Illini have played in a Regional Championship Game in 19 years.
Illinois has won 7 straight games.
Curtis Jones led the Cyclones with 26 points off the bench. Keshon Gilbert paced the starters with 14 points as Iowa State ends its season 29-and-8.
